Deleting a task assigned to a group

It is impossible to delete a task that has been assigned to a group without first "taking" the task. I am sure this was done on purpose. Why is that?

There's no technical limitation, but we prefer people to take responsibility for a task first before deleting it. It's just a logistics thing.
